The Mourning of Primroses——A journey into the music of four female composers whose lives were as beautiful as flowers yet brief.
Four talented musicians born during the 19th century had exceptional talent and seemingly bright futures. However, the ruthlessness of fate, their selfless love, and invisible obstacles in society forced their talent into dormancy at a moment when it should have blossomed.
Lili Boulanger (1893–1918) was the first female composer to win the Prix de Rome. She entered the competition at age 19 with a piece that shocked the musical world at the time. When it was finally her time to shine, the First World War broke out. She eventually succumbed to a serious illness that she had suffered since childhood and passed away at the age of 24.
Nadia Boulanger (1887–1979), the older sister of Lili Boulanger, had won second place in the Prix de Rome. Despite her compositional talent, she struggled to overcome her grief following the death of her sister, Lili, and decided to cease composing. Though forgotten by history, Boulanger dedicated herself to a lifetime of teaching, nurturing a generation of brilliant musicians.
Fanny Mendelssohn (1805–1847) showed musical talent at a young age. She was a role model for her brother Felix Mendelssohn. However, most of her works were unpublished due to the gender norms at the time. Fanny died of a stroke shortly after she finally decided to publish her work in her own name. Bereft at the loss of his sister, Felix died six months later.
Clara Schumann (1819–1896) was the most renowned concert pianist in Europe during her lifetime. Her fame surpassed that of her husband, Robert Schumann. In addition to playing the piano, Clara was also exceptionally talented in composing. After the death of her husband, she shifted her career focus and stopped composing, choosing instead to spend the rest of her life promoting her husband’s works.
"The Mourning of Primroses" combines music and theatrical performance, intricately portraying the self-choices and life paths of four female composers. A hundred years later, at this moment, you will likely see a reflection of yourself in their stories.
